It is understood that Mr. J. R. Reed, K.C., of Auckland, is to be appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court. Mr. 11. Beattie has arrived in New Plymouth and takes over control of the ! Carnegie Institute and Museum as from j to-day. I Sir William Berries, who is going to i England, has resigned his portfolios, but 1 has not resigned from the Executive i (says a Press telegram from Welling-/ ■ton). i Mr. J. T M. Hornsby, ex-M.P., for [ Wairarapa, who has been an invalid for ' over 12 months, is still in a very weak • state. His friends are only permitted I to converse with him for short periods. 1 The death occurred at Auroa Road on | Friday last of the Maori chief, Kahu | Pukoro Tamati Hoone, at the age of I'7l years. A big tangi is being held (near Oeo, a large congregation of natives being present from all parts of I the Dominion. Mr. F. V. Frazer (late assistantPublic Service Coinmissipner > was yesterday sworn in by the Chief Justice as Judge of the Arbitration Court. He will leave for Auckland to-morrow to preside at the sittings of the Arbitration Court there. The Greek Crown Prince will marry Princess Elizabeth of Roumania at Bucharest in the second week of February (says a cable message). The Roumanian Crown Prince will marry Princess Helena of Greece at Athens shortly afterwards. Mr. B. L. Hammond, of the legal division staff of the Public Tru>t Office, has been appointed Registrar of the Arbitration Court, as successor to Mr. John H. Salmond, recently appointed a Magistrate. Mr. Hammond was for several years a clerk of court in the Justice Department.
In reply to the invitation given FieldMarshal Lord Haig to vis.it New Zealand after the Returned S’ofdiers’ Conference in South Africa, the Prime Minister has received the following cablegram: ‘“Much touched by your invitation, regret unable to visit New ZealaniU'at present. —Haig.” Cr. J. W. Hayden, who is leaving next Tuesday on a trip to England, was granted leave of absence al last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough ‘Council for the balance of his term of office. The Mayor (Mr. F E Wilr-on), on behalf of the council, expressed to Mr. Hayden their best wishes for an enjoyable trip.
An invitation to join the Parliamentary East Coast trip has been extended to ’Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., by Messrs, Lysnar and Williams and the Hon A. T. Ngata? M.P.’fi. The party assembleat Rotorua on February 12 and the tour concludes at Napier on the 25th inst. It is being arranged by the East Coast Parliamentary representatives. The whole of the estate of the late Mrs. 'Mary Soley, the oldest resident of Otane (Hawke’s Bay) who died at the of 94 years, has been bequeathed to charitable institutions, which will benefit to the extent of between £5OOO and £6OOO. Mrs. Soley’s executors found about. £lOOO in notes and cash in her dwelling.
