RIOTS IN ITALY.
GENERAL STRIKE IN FLORENCE. PITCHED BATTLE IN THE STREET. By Telegraph.—Press Assn— Copyright. Received Jan. 30. 5.5 p.m. Rome, Jan. 28. Socialists have declared a general strike in Florence, interrupting the railways between Rome and Northern Italy. Serious brushes occurred at Florence between Socialists and anti-Soeialists. The latter, armed with revolvers, traversed the city in motor cars, and a pitched battle occurred in the street, but ceased upon the arrival of carabineers and Royal Guards in armored cars. Several were wounded. A train abandoned at Pistoja was manned by an emergency staff, and continued its journey,, but was subsequently ambushed.* Armed men fired on the locomotive, but passengers returned the fire, and the assailants were driven off. —Aus. and N.Z.
