In the Church the signs are both dark and bright. Among true believers, those who in every denomination, and in none, name the Name of Christ with love and faith and reverence—what are the signs among them? We are warned that in the latter days His people will be prosecuted, shall be betrayed one by another, and that they shall be hated of all men for His Name’s sake. And today we see a process of sifting going on. Believers are being tested by the offence of the Cross as never before. And when we find many turning to a broader pathway than of Christ’s order unwilling to risk unpopularity by open expression of allegiance to the Son of God, we know that these are the last days which he foretold. On the other hand, there does seem to be a longing for holiness of life, and for an experience of the power of the Holy Spirit. Above all. it is doubtful if there ever was a period in which there was such an unmistakeable consciousness on the part of those who desire to walk closely with Him that His return is at hand. This is not emotion or fancy. Did not our Lord say that His Spirit would show His people things to come? As Dr. Stuart Holden has so well put it: “If I am travelling through unknown country in company with those who know it, and see fellowpassengers taking down their wraps, getting ready to depart, I know we are getting toward the end of the journey.” When, all over the world, among the most earnest, active, vigorous, self-sac-rificing men and women in all the mission fields of the world there is an inexplicable stirring of consciousness that He is coming soon, we cannot afford to ignore it. It is eloquent of a movement
of His Spirit in the hearts of His people preparing them to catch the sound of His footfall and to welcome His ap-< preach. “The night is far spent, the day is at hand.” We are distributing n preliminary programme of the proposed Prophetic Conference Meetings, to be held (D.V.) in the Concert Chamber of th? Wellington Town Hall, from 17th to 27 th February next.
