BETTING ALLEGED.
JURY HEAR CASF MEN SENT FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assoctantm. Auckland, Last Night. John Weston was committed for trial on a charge of having carried on the business or occupation of a bookmaker. The evidence of the police showed that papers seized included a printed notice as follows: ‘Not wishing to break the law, I beg to state I am now following the occupation of an electrician at my usual address, where all work will be faithfully carried out as in the past. Thanking you for past favors, and hoping for continuance of same in the new department. Yours respectfully, John Weston.” Several men gave evidence of having visited the premises, the magistrate issuing a certificate preventing any proceedings arising out of the ease except in one instance. The ‘Chief Detective asked leave to withdraw the charge against this witness, and he said a -second charge against Weston of having permitted his premises to be used as a common gaming house would probably be withdrawn.
