BIG PAYMENTS WANTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn Copyright.. London, Jan. 27. To-day’s Labor Conference on unemployment unanimously adopted the proposals cabled on the 23rd that those for whom no work is available through employment exchanges or trades unions are entitled to maintenance, including benefits under the Unemployment Insurance Act at the rate of 40s weekly for each householder, 25s for each single man or woman, and additional allowances for dependents, and adjourned un. til February 23 to enable the executives of the unions to ascertain members’ opinions respecting the steps necessary to secure the carrying out of the recommendations. Mr. Thomas stated that probably some people would interpret that to mean that the February conference would have a mandate on the question of direct action. (Delegates, “Hear hear”) Mr. Thomas: “That Is not. the case. The joint committee neither affirmed nor rejected .direct action. The adjouraed c®afer«nce must decide”
