UNREST IN ITALY.
RIOTING IN MANY CITIES. DISARMING THE POPULATION. By Telegraph.—Press Assn Copyright. Received Jan. 27, 5.5 p.m. Rome, Jan. 26. Signor Giolitti (the Premier) has issued a decree embracing Modena, Ferrara, and Bologna cities and provinces revoking permission to carry firearms, and the Prefects have been ordered to take immediate steps to effectively disarm the population. The Labor Chamber at Bologna has been destroyed by fire. Nationalists overpowered the military and set fire to every room and burned the palace to the ground. The buildings were hitherto the headquarters of the Communistic Socialists of Italy. The contents destroyed included vast archives relating to the entire ramifications of the movement throughout Italy. Cafes, theatres, and public resorts in the disturbed provinces have been closed. Armored cars patrol Modena. Nationalists raided the premises of the journal Avanti, and set fire to the book store. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
