The employers are now considering whether they will grant a further conference as requested by the federation. A delicate position has arisen as the result of trouble with the boiler-makers engaged m repair work at the patent slip- The parties are at variance over the interpretation of the dirt money clause, and there may be a serious development if a settlement is not reached at the conference to be held this afternoon. INCIDENCE OF HARBOR RATE.. Wellington, Jan. 25. , Whether the shipping companies are justified in charging to shippers the harbor improvement rate levied by the Harbor Board was discussed at a meeting of the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. It was stated that the shipping companies had to pay the increased rate, which recently had been raised to Is 6d per ton, and they had no option but to charge it to the shippers, as they could not pay it themselves. It was pointed out however, that the rate was unduly high, because it was levied only on inward and transhipment goods, and not on outward goods, such as wool, butter and cheese. It was decided that the secretary should inquire whether the jVe could not be levied upon outward cargo also, so as to make the distribution more even.
The members considered that the city was penalised while the producers escaped.
