EXPLOSION ON STEAMER.
ACCIDENT AT PATEA TWO MEN IN HOSPITAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. The coastal steamer Kapuni, which arrived at Wellington to-day from Patea, was severely shaken by an explosion of benzine at Patea on Tuesday afternoon. What was believed to be a tin of kerosene was being poured into a tank in the engine room when the liquid, which proved to be benzine, exploded. N. Walkey (engineer) and W. Leitch (fireman) were severely burnt aboiil the head, face, neck and arms, and are in the Patea hospital. The vessel escaped structural damage, excepting that the paint work of the engine-room was burnt off and the sky-lights were blown off the engineroom.
