FIRE IN GIRLS’ HOME.
INMATES’ HURRIED ESCAPE. By Telegraph.—'Press Assodatlor Auckland, Last Night. Six girls in a dormitory of the Door of Hope, Freeman’s Bay, were awakened shortly after midnight last night by a strong smell of smoke in their room, and gave an alarm of fire. When the brigade reached the scene the girls, in their scanty night attire, had all escaped through the smoke and remained calmly outside with the staff and Mrs. Drew, the matron. The fire burned vigorously for a time, all the lining boards in the dining room, together with a settee and a valuable piano, were consumed ingthe flames. It is estimated the damage runs into some hundreds of pounds. The building is insured for £llOO, and the contents for £4OO, in the Northern Insurance Company.
