OVERSEAS SHIPS.
TWENTY-EIGHTH TO BERTH. WEST MAHWAH FROM AMERICA.« The 28tb overseas ship to enter the port of New Plymouth, the American steamer West Mahwah, was berthed about eight o’clock last night. Entering port the West Mahwah was drawing 18ft 6in. Her cargo consists of 18,000 cases of benzine and 400,000 feet of timber, consigned to various parts of the province. The tonnage of th% West Mahwah is 5586 tons. The vessel is one of the new ships owned by the General Steamship Corporation, having been built only eight months ago at Seattle. She is* of the same type as the West Camargo, and other vessels of the line which have visited New Plymouth, and she is an oil-burner. The vessel loaded at various ports in the United States of America, and after having .called at Auckland, Napier, and Wellington, is making New Plymouth her final port in the Dominion. Discharging operations will commence on Thursday, to-day being a watersiders’ holiday, and it is expected the ship will leave in about a week’s time for Melbourne. Captain E. W. Cullen is in command, and has with, him a* first and second officers, respectively, Messrs. O. Rotetad and A. McLean. The chief engineer is Mr. W. Barnes, who has been with the West Mahwah ever since the • vessel was built, havirig superintended 'her construction in the dockyards. His , first assistant is Mr. J. L. Firer. Cap- . tain Cullen is an Australian by birth, ; and his forthcoming trip to Melbourne will be the first occasion on which he I has visited his native country for the past sixteen years.
