(By "Moturoa.”) Thursday's racing at Trentham was favored by excellent weather and a fast track, tjie times registered being almost too good to be true. The Hallowmas horse, Maioha, continued li’.s victorious march by winning the Cup with 8.7 in the torrid time of 2.31 further emphasised his claim to be amongst the first (lighters in the distance handicap ranks this season. The Invercargill Cup winner, Eleus. a cast-off of the Greenwood stable by the way, also shaped very well. First Salute still runs without much luck. It is hard luck to fill the role of runner-up !.n two such valuable stakes as the Auckland and Wellington Cups—both within a month. The defeat of Vespucci, Punka and Nobleman must have been costly to their owners. Facile princeps amongst the sprinters was Statuette. In two seasons the flying daughter of the unpopular Marble Arcli has recorded five firsts, a second and a third, in seven starts. Last season sl?e was defeated by Arrowsmith (in receipt of 31bs) at Woodville, and this year she beat all but Gloaming at Felldlng. In running six furlongs with 8.13 in I.U she was responsible for a great gal/op, and Warplane, who was less than a length away at the finish, also ran well. Warplane is sure to win a good race shortly. One was hardly prepared to see the Fordell-trained Kinsem in a place, though, on the day before the race, fl:e writer saw a wager made that the daughter of Autuunnus would run in 1,2, or 3. Maniahera’s defeat in the Jumpers’ Flat Race was a severe blow for Manawatu sports, who were on him to a man. T. Pritchard, who rode the winner, Pacific Slope, was in fine form at the Wairarapa meeting during the holidays, Tiding some soven winners. Falstaff, the runner-up on Thursday, paid a good second dividend considering the speed he showed in his races at Awapunl. Princess Pat had a second to her credit recently, as did Sleeping Beauty, and they were only separated by the narrowest of margins in the Nursery Handicap. Apparently Taiparu, Backsheesh and Creme de Menthe found the pace set by the light-weights too fast for.them. Tamatete, the Absurd youngster in Tilley's stable, is worth watching at tl:e meeting. Rational’s runaway romp !.n the Wellington Stakes was quite anticipated. He equalled Gloaming’s time (58 3-5 sees) in 1919, and it is hard to say what he could'have chopped off it had he been pushed. A meeting between Rational and one of the older w.f.a. sprinters will cause great interest. With a brace of victories on Thursday Hector Gray raised his total of winning rides to 32%. ('. Emerson follows with 27, th(|i come Roy Reed 20, G. Young 19, J. O’Shea 18, A. Reed 18. and H. Goldfinch 16. Ma iota’s time, 2.31, Is a record for the Wellington Cup, being three-fifths of a second better than the time recowled by Boe (1916) and Bunting (1917). Incidentally, Maioha’s weight (8.7) was the highest, carried to victory since Achilles won w\th 9 4 in 1907. The weight carrying record is held by the defunct Advance, who got home in 1903 with 10 4.
