BOWLING

TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. FIRST DAY’S PLAY. SOME SPLENDID GAMES. I The, sixteenth annual tournament under the auspices of the Taranaki Bowling Centre was opened at New Plymouth yesterday, under most favorably conditions, and the gathering promises to be very successful and enjoyable to the large number of competitors. Some 56 rinks are competing, representative of every Taranaki club and of Patea, Waverley, St. Johns, Gonville and Taihape. The tournament is being played on the New Plymouth, Fitzroy and West End greens, which are in splendid condition. Yesterday morning owing to the rain of the previous evening, the greens were a Ititle dead, but as the day advanced they became very keen, and 'some splendid bowling was' witnessed, many of the matches being decided on the last head, after many fluctuations. “’Burnt heads” were very frequent, one game between S. J. Smith (Fitzroy) and J. D. Sole (West End) being especially noticeable' in this respect. The arrangements for the tournament were excellent, a tribute to the organising ability of the executive and its principal officials, Messrs. J. D. Sole (president) and A. T. Moore (secretary). The umpires were Messrs. W. F. Brooking (New Plymouth green), J. H. Hamilton (West End), A. K. Smart (Fitzroy). Play commenced at 9.30 a.m. Prior to rolling the jack, the competitors were accorded a cordial welcome at the respective greens. This year only two games are being played daily, instead of three as on previous occasions, and the innovation appears to be appreciated by the majority of the competitors. Detailed results are as follow: «A” SECTION (New Plymouth Green). First Round.
