THE AMERICANS BEATEN' BROOKES’ GREAT PLAY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 25, 12*50 a.m. Sydney, Jan. 24. Over two thousand attended, the third day’s tennis matches at Double Bay, between the Australians and the AmerL cans. The weather was fine and hot. Johnston and O’Hara Wood opened the programme. The second set proved a fine contest, both players racing neck and neck. They were four all, and John* ston eventually won 11—9, after one deuce. Heath easily accounted for Washbum, who played in lieu of Tilden. The doubles promised to be classic, and the promise was fully redeemed. Brookes, undeterred by his opponents’ vitality, pitted strategy against speed to such purpose that he won the first se t 6—3. Wood ably assisted his partner, his net play being of the highest class. In the succeeding set Brookes’ play was a masterpiece. The express service and smashing of the visitors left little time for thinking, but Brookes’ keen sense of anticipation minimised the difficulty. The Americans gained the lead at the eleventh game, but Australia won the next three games and the set. The visitors opened the third set, winning two games to love, per medium of Tilden’s terrific service and Johnston’s cross-court drives, but the Australians drew levels on the sixth game, mainly due to Brookes’ superior court generalship. The visitors wdn 6—4. A volleying duel between Wood and the Americans marked the opening of the fourth set, Wood brilliantly smashing intojlie stand. It was level pegging at the tenth game, and brilliant work I by the Australians gave them the next two games and the rubber.. Details are: Johnston defeated O’Hara Wood, 6 —2, 11—9. Heath defeated Washburn. 6—2, 6—4.
