A sensational encounter betweeen police and ambushers took place at the Tolka bridge, Dublin. Receiving information in the morning that an ambush was being prepared, motor lorries, with auxiliary police, and an armoured car, rushed to the scene. The ambushers, who had loop-holed the wall of the bridge, were surprised, and fled into the fields, and the police pursued them, firing. One rebel was dangerously wounded, and is not expected to recover, while six arrests were made. Bombs were discovered behind the wall, and revolvers were found in the prisoners’ possession. Several hundred troops were stationed three hundred yards from the bridge, and two lorryloads of police recruits arrived at Tolka bridge just after the ambushers had been dispersed.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. POLICEMEN KILLED. SON SEES FATHER SHOT. Received Jan. 22, 5.5 p.m. London Jan. 21. Head Constable Larkin and Sergeant Moxham were ambushed while cycling at Ballincolig. The sergeant was shot dead off his bicycle, but the constable escaped. O’Sullivan, a constabulary officer, was shot dead in the streets of Listorel, Kerry, while walking with his son, five years old.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. ARRESTS IN TIPPERARY. MILITARY HAMPERED. London, Jan. 21. There is great military activity in South Tipperary. Dozens of arrests have been made. Roads have been trenched in several districts in order to hamper the forces of the Crown, which are compelled to fill up the trenches as they go along. The military are accompanied by hostages and female searchers.—Aus..N.Z. Cable Assn. RELATIVE OF MANNIX ARRESTED. Received Jan. 23, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan. 21. The military arrested Father T. Mannix, of Ballyhea. He is a relative of Archbishop Mannix.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. COUNCILLORS ARRESTED. London, Jan 21. Police and auxiliaries raided the board room of the Macroom District Council, and arrested all the councillors, the county surveyor, and the deputy surveyors. All but five were subsequently re-leased.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. BOMBS FOUND IN BREWERY. London, Jan. 21. Following on the official reprisals in Cork, the military arrested 23 persona, including Crawford, a Unionist chairman of technical schools, in whose brewery bombs were found.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. EX-GUARDSMAN MURDERED. London, Jan. 21. Thomas Lawless ex-Irish Guardsman, was shot dead while in bed at Marlboro. It is alleged that the murderer was in uniform.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
