CABLE DELAYS.
DUPLICATION DISCUSSED. By Talegrapli.—Press Assn—Copyright. London, Jan. 19. Mr. A. H. Illingworth (Postmaster. General), replying to a deputation of representatives of the newspaper interests of Britain and the whole Empire, stated that the department was doing everything possible to minimise the cable and ..elegraphic delays. He was discussing the duplication of the Pacific cable with the Governments concerned, and hoped that shortly a decision would be reached as to whether the whole cable or only a portion should be duplicated. The Imperial trans-Atlantic cables were being fitted with an apparatus to speed up transmission, and the Government was also pushing on with the Imperial wireless chain. The Loa-field-Cairo section was already approaching completion and only awaiting the delivery of material, after which he hoped that the other stations in India, Singapore, Hongkong and Australia would soon be completed. The post office had already established wireless services with several parts of the Continent, including the Scandinavian countries, Paris. Berlin, Vienna, Prague, and Bel-grade.—Aus.-N.Z.
