BOXING.
MATCHES CANCELLED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. New York, Jan. 19. The New York Times sports editor declares that he is definitely informed that the Dempsey-Carpentier bout has been cancelled owing to failure of Kearns, Deschamps, Rickard and Brady to deposit sums as a guarantee of good faith. Cochran alone deposited 33,333 dollars. Kearns and Deschamps were supposed to deposit 50,000 dollars each, and Rickard and Brady 33,333 dollars each. The contract stipulated that the deposits should be made before November 20, 1920. It is also understood f%at the Willard-Dempsey match in Madison Square Garden on March 17 has been cancelled. The State Boxing Commission recently adopted a ruling limiting the maximum admission charge to 15 dollars: th" ’•"ut. therefore, will no longer be profitable. Rickard denies .he Times statement that the Dempsey-Carpentier fight has been cancelled. He says that the match will take place positively on July 2, eithei* in Canada or England. Rickard says that every cent the articles call for has been posted to banks here. ANOTHER VERSION. London, Jan. 19. Cochran states that, if . the American match, Carpentier v. Dempsey, is definitely off he will offer a purse of £4OOO for the men to box in England. Carpentier, who is in England, states that the match, is not oft’. He paid his forfeit on November 20.
