HOMES FOR WORKERS.

PROGRESS OF THE WORK. SHORTAGE OF MATERIALS. Difficulties in regard to the supply of materials continue to hamper the work of erecting workers’ dwellings in New' Plymouth. There are nine houses under way, including six at Fitzroy. There are yet a considerable number of houses to be started, but the department has experienced great difficulty in getting builders to tender. A canvass has been made in the trade, but up to the present in no case has any firm been found willing to undertake work on a straight-out contract, though the department has met with offers to build dwellings on a percentage basis. When the department has settled this question more houses will be commenced on sites, including the land acquired by the department in thu Veale Estate. An official yesterday told a Daily News reporter that the housing shortage appeared to be as acute as ever.
