IRISH CRIMES.
WARNING TO CORK. MURDERS MUST NOT CONTINUE. PEOPLE’S PASSIVE ATTITUDE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Jan. 19, 5.5 p.m. London, Jan- 18. General Strickland, in a letter to the Deputy-Mayor of Cork, referring to attempts to murder police, gives a warning that the present state of affairs in the city cannot be allowed to continue. General Strickland says he will be compelled to take drastic measures to secure the lives of the Crown forces against cowardly attacks by assassins. He is prepared to give the inhabitants every consideration, but he says the cause of peace cannot be promoted by their passive attitude. In his letter General Strickland says: “In accordance with the urgent wish of the people of Cork, I used my influence to secure the reprieve of Joseph Murphy. Now lam told that martial law is bringing discomfort to the general population. Nevertheless, in the last fortnight, there have been dastardly attempts to murder Irish constabulary in Cork city. It is ineonceiveable that the majority of the inhabitants 'do not view these murders with disgust, but I see no traces of steps to purge the city of the assassins. I am ready to let martial law rest as lightly as possible upon lawabiding people if I see signs that they are assisting me, but I can do nothing if this passive attitude continues.”— Aus.-N.Z.
