PLENTY OF WORK.
SHORTAGE OF LABORERS. POSITION IN TARANAKI. There is plenty, of work for laborers in Taranaki, and no fewer than fiftytwo men are wanted -for public works throughout the province. According to information given to a Daily Nows reporter yesterday by the inspector for the Department of Labor (Mr. W. J--Mountjoy), laborers and carpenters are most in demand. One of the jobs on which the department is looking to place more men is the Mount Messenger Road metalling. There is apparently no dearth of employment, for since the beginning of January only eight applicants for positions have appeared at the labor bureau in New Plymouth. There is a tendency generally on the part of both employers and applicants to overlook the bureau, but as this is a Government institution set up for their convenience it is a wonder, the facility is not availed of more. More general reference to the bureau by all concerned would help employers in their efforts to secure men, and would also be a guide to the department as to situations awaiting any applicants.
