Mr. C. W’. Garrard has been appointed senior inspector of schools for the Auckland district.

The Rev. H. L. B. Goertz, who has been in Rotorua for some considerable time as chaplain to the Church of England Institute for Soldiers and as curate to Canon F. W. Chatterton, has been appointed to take charge of the Patea district in the Wellington Diocese.

Dr. R. J. Tillyard, chief of the biological department of the Cawthron Institute, has been' elected a member of the Entomological Society of France, an honor which is held by very few who are not French by birth.

The many friends of Miss Maida Hooker will be interested and gratified to learn that the Associated Board of R.A.M. and R.C.M., London, have agreed to let her take up the Exhibition Scholarship which she won in 1916, and of which she was then, on account of the war, unable to avail herself (says the Hawera Star).

Mr. JFrank Lawry, member for Parnell frdm 1887 to 1910, died yesterday, aged 77 (states a Press Association telegram from Auckland). The late Mr. Lavfry, who was one of the most famijiar figures in Parliament, came to New Zealand from England in 1863 and took up farming in the Auckland district. Local politics soon engaged his attention, and then, aspiring for higher honors, he contested the South Franklin seat in the Parliamentary elections of 1881, and he was returned In 1884 he was defeated, but he won the North Franklin seat- in 1887, and winning the Parnell seat at the following election he continued to represent the Auckland electorate until 1910. In 1891 he was appointed Senior Government Whip, resigning in 1894. Mr. Lawry leaves a widow and one daughter.

The Very Rev. Dr. Hertz, Chief Rabbi, accompanied by Mr. Albert M. Wolf, 0.8. E., vice-president of the United Synagogue and member of the executive of the Jewish War Memorial, with 'their private secretaries, were to have arrived in Christchurch on April 12, but the president of the Canterbury Jewish congregation was advised by cablegram last week that they have been | delayed in South Africa, and will not reach New Zealand till two weeks later than the date originally fixed. As far as is known, Dr. Hertz and Mr. Wolf will reach Christchurch on April 26, and leave for Dunedin two days later. The Mayor of Christchurch, who was waited on by representatives of the Canterbury Jewish congregation, intends extending a civic welcome to Dr. Hertz and Mr. Wolf. During thir stay in Christchurch ’they will address a public meeting in furtherance of the Jewish War Memorial, which is to take the form of a college for the education of young men as Jewish clergymen. Mr. W. C. Somers, who died at Auckland last week, was well-known in business and shipping circles as a member of the firm of Messrs). Russell and Somers. The late Mr. Somers, who was 53 years of age, was born in Cork, Ireland, and arrived in Auckland about 45 years ago by the ship Dunedin with his mother, brothers, and sisters. As a lad he entered the employ of Messrs A. 11. Nathan and Co., afterwards going to the late Mr. D. B. Cruickshank, with whom he remained until the latter’s death. Mr. Somers then joined his partner (who predeceased him) in founding the firm of Messrs Russell and Somers, conducting a large shipping business. He also occupied a number of public offices. Mr. Somers was for a long time a steward of the Auckland Racing Club, of the committee of which body he was a member up to the time of his death.
