BUTTER AND CHEESE.
EXPORTS FROM TARANAKI. ' KUMARA TO LOAD SOON. The cable appearing in yesterday’s Daily News concerning the first sale in London of the new season’s cheese at }L52s a cwt., indicates that the price of this commodity is being well maintained in the Home markets, as the figure mentioned is in the vicinity of the best price arranged by factories who sold their output. Prospects in the industry generally are good.
Cheese in «tore at the Taranaki Producers’ work > at Moturoa amounts to 54,090 crates, and the total butter in store is 44,000 boxes. There will be a number of shipments to the Home mar* ket shortly. About the beginning of nexf month the Kumara will load at New Plymouth 7000 crates of cheese and 20,000 boxes of butter. Other shipments of cheese will be made as follows by transhipment: Somerset, about February 6, 8000 crates; Opawa, about February 10, 4000 crates. Early in February 23,000 boxes of butter will be loaded by the Hororata at Wellington.
MARKET PROSPECTS. FIRM PRICES EXPECTED. In the opinion of Mr. T- C. Brash, as. sistant secretary of. the National Dairy Association, who has been visiting New Plymouth, the prices for both dairy products will remain firm, but he believes that butter will bring rather a higher price t)ian cheese. Ha remarks that the export of cheese from Canada has decreased from BJ,OOS ten* to under 40,000 ton§, over a period of ten years, and that the increase in New Zealand over a similar period has more than made up the shortage in Canadian. Both New Zealand butter and cheese are keenly sought after at Home. Importers are very glad to receive a regular supply of New Zealand butter, but under Government control, as at present, New Zealand butter was not marketed independently (stated Mr. Brash.) The various brands on the boxes were removed, and many different makes put together and the whole disposed of as “Government” butter.
