TERRIBLE TRAGEDY.

FATHER BEATS SON TO DEATH. THEN ATTEMPTS SUICIDE. j By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dargaville, Jan. 17I A fearful murder and attempted suicide occurred at Marohemo, near Maun* gaturoto, yesterday morning, at eight o’clock. William Rawlin Needham, aged 18 years, was busy separating cream when an altercation took place with his father, Thomas Needham, aged 65 years. The father picked up a broom and knocked his son down and belabored him with the broom till he was killed. The body was frightfully knocked about. When the father realised the position he cut his own throat with a knife, but this proving ineffectual he secured a rope to hang himself, but was too weak to carry the plan into effect. Constable Boag was promptly on the scene and had Needham senior removed to Papa- ■ roa Hospital The wound is not likely to prove fatal
