MEAT MARKET:

PRICES AND FREIGHTS AN ADJUSTMENT NEEDED. CO-OPERATION WITH DAIRYMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 15. The question of meat freights was discussed at yesterday’s conference between the Board of Agriculture and the Producers’ Committee, and co-operation with dairy producers was urged. Steps were taken to arrange a meeting of the producers and Dairy Associations to dis. cuss joint action. The conference resolved that, failing the removal of all control in the British meat market, the maximum prices for lamb and light wether mutton should be adjusted to place New Zealand meat in a more equitable selling position as compared with hoir grown. HANDLING OF MEAT. INQUIRY INTO CRITICISM. Wellington, Last Night. The Prime Minister says the Government is taking steps to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the charges made by Mr. Holland in the House of Representatives, regarding, the slaughtering and handling of New Zealand meat. No decision has been reached yet as to who would constitute the commission. FROZEN MEAT IN STORE. PROSPECTS MUCH BRIGHTER. The whole of the frozen meat held in store in New Zealand for the Imperial Government is to be shipped by the end of the present month. Vestey Bros., Limited, who purchased all the beef owned by the Imperial Supplies Department, have made arrangements to send ,'their own ships to the Dominion clear 'the stores here, and it is anticipated that there will be plenty of space for the new season’s meat. A great deal of the New Zealand frozen meat held in Britain is being disposed of on the Continent, and it is expected that when it has all been cleared there will be a better market in Britain for ox beef. An official of one of the Auckland freezing companies told an Auckland Herald reporter that a fair quantity of the New Zealand meat held in Britain for a considerable period had deteriorated and was tarnishing the Dominion’s reputation in London. However, notwithstanding the drop in the price of the meat held, sales of ox beef had recently been made privately at prices in excess of those paid under the requisition, This authority expressed the opinion that there is every prospect of good prices being realised for ox beef when a free market is established.
