January 14. Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Stratford to-day. Judgment was entered for the plamtiff by default in each of the following undefended coses:—Commissioner of. faxes v. William Bellamy, £7 17 s 8d (costs £1 18s); Cannon and Pemberthy v. G. Olgie, £l3 4s 3d (costs £2 10s 6d); R. Hannah and Co. v. Roy Hill, £1 17s 6d {costs 9s); A. H. Taylor v. Thomas Blanchett, £3 (costs 9s); E. N. Heal v. William Gee Taylor, £3 15s (costs £1 3s 6d); John Burkett v. William Gee Taylor, £2 2s 6d (costs £1 3s 6d/. On a judgment summons William Gee Taylor was ordered to pay the sum of £l2 16 g forthwith to Robert Bull,ln default twelve days’ In the partially-heard case ojffjMcCluggage and Co. (Mr. King) v. J.Whittington, Mr, A. Coleman, who viously appeared for the defendant, notified that he was withdrawing front the case as the defendant did not appear to give evidence. Mr. King asked for judgment, and the Magistrate gave£|udgment for the plaintiff for the full amount, £ll 2s fid and costs ( £o). At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, land agents’ licenses were granted to the following: J. McCluggage, W. R. Foley, T. Waite, W. W. Hodge, A. M. Robertson, and W. H. Kelly. FAREWELL TO MR AND MRS G. BURGESS. There was a large gathering at the Town Hall last night, when a public farewell was accorded Mr. G. Burgess and family, who are leaving Stratford, after a residence of over 30 years. The gathering was arranged by the Court Stratford Lodge of Forresters, of which Mr. Burgess had been secretary for the past twelve years. Bro. J. D. Murray, P.D.C.R. presided, and during an interval in the evening made a presentation of a handsome silver tea service and tray, to the departing guests. . Bro. Murray referred to the splendid work done by Bro. Burgess for the Court Stratford Lodge as a trustee and as. secretary, and expressed the genuine regret they all felt that he was compelled to take his departure for health reasons. -
Sister E. Murray, Chief Ranger, Court Stratford, th&i read the inscription on the presentation and handed the service ’ io Bro. Burgess. Bfro. C. D. Sole, 1.0.0. F., M.A.; Bro. W. • Tunbridge, Court Waireka, A.0.F., New Plymouth.; Bro. J. H. Jones, U.A.0.D., Stratford; and Bro. P. Aitken, I-0.0.F., ;American Order, Stratford, also spoke in appreciation of Bro. and Mrs. Burgess. v Bro. Burgees, in the course of his reJ ply, expressed his gratitude for the reception he had received and his thanks for the handsome present. ’ During the. evening, vocal items were ■ contributed by Miss Milner, Mrs. Milne ■ and Mr. P. Aitken, and Mr. E. Mumby gave a recitation. The accompanists were Miss Moon and Mrs. Bianchi. ’ Dancing was kept up until 2 a m., the I music being suplied by Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra, with Bros. R. E Plews, E. E Hancock and P. Burkett in the capacity as M.C.’s.
