STREET TRAFFIC.
KEEPING FOOTPATHS CLEAR. SOME DANGEROUS CORNERS Some suggestions in regard to the regulation of pedestrian traffic, including the provision of better notice boards for the direction of the public, are made in the monthly report of the New Plymouth borough inspector (Mr. R. Day>. He also advises that at some street intersections some warning to motorists is necessary. The report' states:—“The dicussion which arose from a paragraph in my last report had an excellent effect upon the foot traffic. During the Christmas a.nd New Year holidays the conduct of the people was most gratifying and the work of keeping the footpaths dear was very much easier. -I hope that the good result seen during the holidays will continue. In this connection it would be well to draw attention to the most inadequate sign: Txeep to the right.’ They are too small and~in quite the wrong position. In my opinion four good sfigns fixed about 6ft. Gin. from the pavement, made something like a fire alarm box with white glass and red letters, with a light inside at nights, would serve the purpose well. “At the same time some well defined mark is required at street intersections to warn motorists to keep on their own sides is necessary. The dumb policeman at Hawera is an excellent arrangement, but I am afriad too Costly, considering that we require something of the kind at no less than twelve corners. There are several corners in New Plymouth which are particularly dangerous and it is essential that motorists keep well to their own sides. Examples of these cornel’s are outside Mr. Burgess’ garage, Standish Hill, Dr. Home’s corner, and the intersection of Currie and Gill Street. I suggest that a white block of stone be set in the street on the inner edge of the footcrossing at 2 of these intersections. The top of the stone could be rounded off, and stand, say, 3 inches above the surface of the street.”
