TARANAKI’S TRADE.

RECORD YEAR AT MOTUROA. YEARLY EXPANSION MAINTAINED. Figures concerning the trade at the port of New Plymouth show that the volume of business is rapidly increasing every year. For the period of 52 weeks ending on January 8, the total tonnage handled at the port was 123,954, an increase of over 19,000 tons compared with the previous year. The import trade was much bigger, being over 20,000 tons in excess of 1919, while the exports show a slight decrease. This is accounted for by the fact that in 1919 a large quantity of produce which had accumulated was despatched overseas through the port. The dairy produce shipped in 1919 totalled 19,147 tons, and in the year just paassed it was 13,437 tons. The quantity of meat despatched during the year Amounted to 6564 tons, compared with 45*20 tons in the preceding period. The number of vessels visiting the port shows a decrease, being 238 against 268 in 1919, but the aggregate tonnage of the vessels was greater, accounted for by the increasing number of liners trading to New Plymouth. In one month three overseas vessels berthed at Moturoa. Details are:—
