PERSONAL.

Mr. R. Pepperell, of New Plymouth, left last night by the Rarawa for Auckland. A Press telegram from Auckland reports the death of. Mr. W. C. Somers, of Messrs. Russell and Somers, the wellknown shipping agents. Out of seven applicants, Mr. Henry Drees, 8.A., has been appointed housemaster at Dannevirke High School. At present Mr. Drees is on the staff of the Training College, Dunedin. He is 25 years of age. Mr. Davies, of Humphries and Davies, was last night appointed secretary of the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League, in succession to the late Mr. W. A. Collis. The new librarian of the New Plymouth Carnegie Institute and museum (Mr. H. Beattie, of Oamaru) will assume charge on February 1. Mr. Ric/iard Aroa, who was formerly in business at Fitzroy, Okato and Mauaia, and latterly has resided in Onehunga, died rather suddenly yesterday. He leaves a widow (a daughter of Mr. T. Clare, of New Plymouth), and three daughters, the eldest being married. He was born in Blenheim 51 years ago, but spent most of his time in Taranaki, where he was highly respected. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church, and a keen worker in the prohibition cause. General regret will be felt in his sudden demise. At a meeting of the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League last evening, the following motion was carried: The League desires to place on record its sense of the great loss it and the town generally have sustained by the death of its secretary (Mr. W. A. Collis), who gave his time and talents ungrudgingly in the promotion of the welfare of the town and district, and particularly in the conservation and improvement of scenic reserves, and who always was a model of rectitude in his dealings and actions with his fellows. It also desires to offer its condolences, to Mrs. Collis and members of his fam- ’ ily in the great loss they have, sustained > by his death. \
