“PLENTY OF WORK.”
BIG DEMAND FOR LABOUR. MANY IMMIGRANTS QUICKLY ' PLACED. There is a greater demand for labor at the present time than can be coped with by the Government Employment Bureau. A New Zealand Timps representative was informed that since the commencement of the new year there had been a steady demand by employers for workmen at the Ghuznee Street office. Included in the applicants for jobs were a number of immigrants who had recently arrived from England, several ; having landed only a few days ago by the Paparoa. All of these had been placed in employment at the gasworks and: at the Government Workshops at Petone. Applications by tradesmen were not received in large numbers, such cases being suited in most instances through the various unions, but the bureaq. was chiefly concerned with the finding of employment for unskilled, workers. Men were required for various municipal roading works and other council operations, and there were also vacancies to be filled in other connections.
