At a recent dairy show in EnjJand it was noticed (according to the i.ondon Daily Telegraph) that the herdgirl had often superseded the herdman. Several of the cows and bulls that were x most successful in form and attainments were paraded before the fjudges by quibtlyefficient women. As a rule these herdwomen had served in the Land Army, where they proved their usefulness so conclusively that the farmers had retained them after the formal disbanding of this auxiliary service. It is expected that a large number of these women wiL appear at the popular Islington Show. It appears that before the war there were only five women instructors m dairv work, while at present they number about a hundred. The result of their work is shown in the increased exhibits of cheese, of many varieties and a hi<rh standard of merit, made by small holdem. The dairy woman of to-day needs a sound general education, in which chemistry and other natural - ciences have then- part, allied with-a knowledge of the practical working of the machinery used in connection with milk, butter, and cheese.
