ALLEGED THEFT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Jan. 13. William Pickering, a messenger in the post office, has been arrested on a charge of stealing a postal packet containing a pair of ear-rings. * It is stated that other charges are pending. SUGAR DISTRIBUTION. Wellington, Jan. 13. A deputation from the Fruit-growers’ Federation interviewed the lion. E. P. Lee, Minister of Industries and Commerce, regarding supplies of sugar for fruit preserving and jam-making. Complaint was made of the fact that some people obtained bags of sugar while others were unable to obtain more than a pound or two. Mr. E. P. Lee said that it was impossible to devise a scheme which would prevent all such instances, of favoritism. The best possible was done. He had given attention to the matter of securing extra supplies and hoped to do something quickly. The Minister also promised to have trade with South America investigated with a view to sufficient freight being put on to revive the fruit export trade. NURSERYMEN’S CONFERENCE. Palmerston N., Jan. 13. The conference of nurserymen to-day resolved that the division of horticulture of the Agricultural Department be requested to furnish each season complete details of the number of trees, plants, bulbs, etc., imported from overseas, giving at the same time the country of origin and the value from each country. It was explained that the object was to encourage nurserymen to grow some of the choice plants now imported. A WORKERS’ DELEGATE. Mr. Steve Boreham, of Dunedin, has been elected one of two New Zealand delegates to the annual convention of the Australian Workers’ Union, to be held .at the end of the month.
