TWENTY-SEVENTH LINER.
BERTHED AT LOW WATER. AMERICAN SHIP NEXT WEEK. The twenty-seventh overseas liner to berth at New Plymouth arrived in port yesterday, ahd drawing 17ft. 9in. forward and 19ft. aft, she was berthed at low water. Other liners have also been berthed at low water, but it is interesting to note that it is now not considered necessary to await high water to berth steamers of this class at New Plymouth. Yesterday’s arrival was the BritishIndia Company’s liner Wangaratta from Wellington, and she was berthed about 7.30 a.m. The vessel, which is comparatively new, having been commissioned only about two years, has a net tonnage of 4698 tons, and gross 7897 tons. Her length is 462 ft. and beam 42ft. The vessel will load here 21.000 quarters of beef equal to 51,000 freight carcases from the Smart Road works, and the equivalent of 25,000 freight carcases of beef from Messrs. Borthwick and Sons’ Waitara works, the latter consignment being raiiled to New Plymouth. On completion of loading here the vessel proceeds to Wanganui and then to 'Wellington for coal, finally sailing for the United Kingdom, via Panama and Newport News. The Wangaratta is engaged in the trade between the United Kingdom and Australasian ports, but this is her first visit to New Plymouth. Captain A. Horscroft is in command. The fourth s-teamer to bring direct Taranaki shipments to New ijlymoJith from America, the West Mahwah, is now at Wellington, and she will come here as soon as the overseas berth is vacated by the Wangaratta. At present it is thought the Wangaratta will sail on Monday, so that the West Mahwah will probably leave Wellington on Sunday night. The West Mahwah is a vessel of 8000 tons, and is commanded by Captain Cullen.
