Wednesday has been fixed as the day of the weekly half-holiday iu Patea. As a result of the dry spell, bush fires are raging around the mountain, and unless rain comes soon there will be a considerable loss of grass. On Sunday, the Opunake Times reports, Mr. H. M. Bartie and family, who live at the top of th© Arawhata Road, had a most trying experience with fires surrounding their house and milt Agarri and again their house caught on fire, but was extinguished by a willing band of firefighters. The smoke was particularly troublesome, Mrs. Bartie and het children having to take in the creek, -where they remained 1 for some hours.
