STRATFORD.

TARANAKI DAILY NSWS. STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication should be left at the office of the local representative, W. J. Wilson, next Union Bank. i BOWLING CLUB SOCIAL. January 11. About thirty members of the Stratford Bowling Club gathered at the Club’s pavilion last night for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr. T. A. W. Nicholson, an enthusiastic member of the Club, who recently sold his business in Stratford and intends leaving for Auckland about the end of the month. The evening was mainly dlvoted to cards, although a few of the keenest bowlers managed to get in a little practice on the green. During an interval in the proceedings Mr. G. Smart, in IF.e absence of the president (Mr. J. S. Lyons) at the Dominion tournament at Wellington, proposed the toast of the health of Mr. Nicholson. He said it was sad to see so many of their best members going away, but there was consolation in the fact that other yood men wore always coming in. Mr. Nicholson had been about eight or nine years with them, during which time he had identified hinrself with the sport and made himself Very popular on the green and in his private life. The toast was enthusiastically honored, after which Mr. S. M. Porritt, a former secretary of the Club, Mr. S. Sharp and Mr. C. Jackson (on behalf of the Avon Bowling Club) also testified to Mr. Nicholson’s good qualities as a bowler and as a citizen. Mr. Stuart, on behalf of +he Club members, then presented Mr. Nicholson with a silver-mounted egg cruet, and : wished him and Mrs. Nicholson and family the best of good fortune in the future. He also welcomed as a member of the Club, Mr. Young, who had taken over Mr. Nicholson’s business in Stratford. Mr. Nicholson, in reply, thanked the members for the splendid present and for the kind remarks said about him. The gift would serve to remind him and his family of the many happy years they had spent in Stratford and of the enjoyable hours he had spent on the green, and although he was leaving Stratford he hoped to come back occasionally and enjoy a few games with them. (Applause).

HOSPITAL BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held this morning. Present: Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), R. McK. Morrison, C. R. Finnerty, J. O’Neill, and R. H. Cameron. The medical superintendent reported that during December 24 patients were admitted, 28 discharged and two died, 17 remaining in hospital. Twelve Operations were performed. 'The isolation ward was closed. The chairman reported that the domestic staff was now complete and was working well. The matron (Miss S. G. Beedle) reported. that the wards were again busy. The new domestic quarters arc about finished and two of the rooms are occupied. Mr. Cameron submitted a plan for ■asphalting the paths round the hospital. Provision is made for grass close to the walls.—lt was decided to_proceed with the work; and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr. J. W. Spence for work in preparing the plan. GENERAL. The danger of persons throwing cigarettes and lighted matches on the ground in King Edward Park during the present dry v spell was exemplified the other day when one of the seats in the park caught fire and was only put out after much difficulty. It is feared that if the public are not more careful the whole of the park might catch fire and cause considerable damage. The half-holiday question will be discussed at a special meeting of th& Stratford Borough Council next Monday evening, and although the majority of the councillors are strongly in* favor of the Saturday half-holiday, it is unlikely that that day will be decided upon without a vote of the ratepayers being taken on the matter. A farewell social and dance will be given to Mr. George Burgesh and family in the Town Hall. Stratford, on Thursday night, commencing at 8 o’clock. Mr. F. L. Ward, Crown lands ranger at Stratford, has been ordered away on sick leave, and during his absence his duties will be undertaken by Mr. A. H. Featherston.
