BODY IDENTIFIED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Taumanunui, Last Night. Regarding the body of a man found in the Wanganui River on Wednesday, the letter in the pocket, addressed “Dear Ken,” was from Miss Prouse, Wanganui, to her brother, Ken Prouse, who had spent a few days at Ausford’s farm at Mangahutu, where Jack Gardner was employed. Prouse had borrowed Gardner’s dungarees, and left his sister’s letter in a pocket. The body has now been identified by Ausford as that of Jack Gardner, who was reported missing. BOY DROWNED. Auckland, Jan. 10. Victor Cartier, aged 12, an inmate of the Leslie Orphanage, slipped from rocks into the sea at the Heads while on the way to a bathing place near Mahurangi Heads. The matron (Miss Wright) made a plucky but ineffectual attempt at rescue, but lost her hold on the lad, who sank. The body was recovered yesterday. DEATH OF A SOLDIER. Dunedin, Jan. 10. ! An inquest was opened yesterday regarding the death of James McDonald Dales, an artilleryman, who died <>n Saturday evening as the result of a shot from a revolver. It was stated that the deceased man, when on active service, was on a ship that was torpedoed in the English Channel. Since his return he had been a little nervous. A medical man who was called in said that the wound was apparently self inflicted. The inquest was adjourned. Dales was aged 30 and was a married man with two children. DEATH FROM HANGING.
