Received Jan. 11, 1.5 a.m. Melbourne, Jan. 10, The Science Congress, attended by five hundred delegates from all States and New Zealand, has opened. Professor David is presiding. 2 ALLEGED LIBEL ACTION. Received Jan. 10, 10.10 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 10. John Baddeley and Albert Willis have issued writs claiming £5OOO damages for alleged libel against the Argus newspaper. The alleged libel is contained in an article in connection with the stewards’ strike.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Sydney, Jan. 10. The executive, of the Australian Labor Party forwarded a letter to the Cabinet protesting against the lengthy Parliamentary recess, also requesting the immediate appointment of necessary Legislative Council nominees. Mr. D. R. Hall, the recalled AgentGeneral, arrived in the Qrsova. It is stated that he will possibly seek legal redress for breach of contract. The city is without train or tram services. Junior tram employees have been put off one week in three and seniors work quarter time. A conference of transport workers will meet on Wednesday. The Government proposes introducing the estimates in an amended form in future to enable the taxation commissionaries to refrain from claiming taxation from visitors. Brisbane, Jan. 10. Sir A. Conan Doyle explained that in Melbourne the Argus boycotted him and the Age and the Herald treated him little better. He was favorably impressed by the high tide of spiritual life in Sydney and was more than pleased with the wonderful sympathy and appreciation shown in New Zealand.
