STEAMER IN STORMS.

'•* DECK CARGO LOST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. While crossing the North Atlantic from Liverpool to Newport News, the Waiotapu, which arrived at Auckland early this morning, lost the whole of her deck cargo, composed of phosphorus, sulphuric acid, and other chemicals. Shortly after leaving Liverpool heavy seas were encountered, and a portion ol the deck cargo was washed overboard. In another gale the phosphorus ignited, probably through concussion caused by the seas, and set fire to the remainder of the cargo, which had to be jettisoned. No damage was done beyond this, and Newport News was reached without further mishap.
