DEMAND FOR TELEPHONES.

PREFERENCE TO COUNTRY SETTLERS. A big demand for connection with telephone bureaus is being made on the Postal Department. During his Taranaki visit the Postmaster-General (Hon. J. G. Coates) has had a number of applications from back blocks settlers, and in reply has remarked on the great scarcity of material. He stated, however, that the country settlers would get preference. Speaking to a Daily News reporter yesterday, Mr. Coates emphasised the fact that the Department was hard put to it to meet the demands. Last month throughout the Dominion 10G6 connections were made, and the total number of prospective subscribers awaiting ’phones was 5600. A feature is that the North Island is responsible for a great proportion of the applications, the number being 4700, as against 1800 in the South Island.
