DOMINION TOURNAMENT. | RECORD GATHERING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The largest tournament in the histofy of Australasian bowls opened to-day, and will be continued for three weeks. It is the eighth annual championship of the Dominion Bowling Association. In the rink championship, 640 players are engaged, comprising 160 teams. For pairs there are 186, and for singles 108 players. At present only inter-matches are being played, each of sixteen sections. There are ten teams, and each i team plays two games of twenty-five heads each. After eight games have been | played those who continue to play will 1 be section winners. After the section play is complete & full two life system will be applied to all teams left in. Each team when twice beaten drops out.. The first and second rounds were completed to-day. . . There was ideal weather, there being a warm sun with a light breeze and a pleasant nip in the air. The president of the Dominion Association (Mr. T Bush, Wellington), made a brief opening speech at the headquarters (Wellington Club’s pavilion), and the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. PLuke) officially declared the tournament open. Mrs. C. Bush, daughter-in-law of the president, threw the jack. All the 16 greens are in very fine condition and the tournament opens most auspiciously.
STRATFORD v. AVON. The Stratford Club played a friendly match with the Avon Club on the Stratford green on Saturday, the match being won by the home team by 82 points to 62? Results were as follows, Stratford Club .names being mentioned first:— Lightband, Butcher, Allen, Collier (s) 21, v. Pettigrew, Robin, North, Morison (s) 27. White. Carman, Porritt, Sangster (s) 20, v. Jones, Judd, Jackson, Rowe (*) Patterson, Fookes, Smart, Harris (s) 41. v. Moss, Whiteford, Thompson, Masters J. (s) 17. VISIT OF SYDNEY TEAM. STEWARDS ORDER POSTPONEMENT The secretary of the Auckland Bowling Centre (Mr. A. M. Brydtfn) cabled to Sydney a day or two ago inquiring about the possibility of the New South Wales touring team’s visit being postponed on account of the stewards strike and the consequent hold-up of shipping o'n. the other side of the Tasman Sea. The team was due to leave Sydney on January 13, arriving at Auckland on the 1 1 th inst. Mr. Bryden has received the following reply from Mr. McMillan, manager of ! the touring team: “Earliest boat now on January 20. Uncertain then. Trip indefinite.”
