Mr. Hughes refuses to enter into the controversy regarding naval co-operation in the Pacific, but denies the stories of negotiations between the Dominion aitd America so far as Australia is concern-ed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. FALLING PRICES. Sydney, Jan. 8. According to a soft goods retailer’s opinion, a general decline of prices is expected during the coming year. Warehouses regard a fall as inevitable. Boot manufacturers state that there has been a twenty per cent, fall since July.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. QUESTION OF COAL CONTROL. London, Jan. 7. The Board of Trade, coal owners and miners are conferring with a view to decontrolling the industry at as early a date as possible, the beginning of February. It is understood that the miners are willing to accept the principle of the owners’ oiler of a new wage basis to supersede the settlement of the October strike.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
