HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The Hawera County Council met on Saturday. Present: Councillors J. B. Murdoch (chairman), R. J. Linn, E. A. Washer, B. C. Lysaght, A. Larcom, C. J. Hawken, R. Douglas and Dunlop. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The county foreman (Mr. A. Muggeridge) reported as follows: Ngawhihi Road—A considerable amount of formation has been done on this road making passable the worst places. There is a lot of it that requires to be fixed yet but the teams were wanted elsewhere to get 4. he metal out for metalling the upper portion that was authorised. Main South Road.—About a mile of this road has been re-dressed 'with tar. Ohangai Road. —From the Tawhiti Road about a mile to Mr. Clout’s properly has been tar-scaled and a start [ has been made with the scarifying at (the Mere Mere end getting the road in I readiness for tarring. This work was [started before the holidays but had to I be stopped on account of the coal that • was expected not coming forward. i Tangahoe Valley Road, Kotukutuku Bridge.—The pier on this side of the j stream is in course of erection and is I out of danger of flood, but the work is | slow on account of the shortage of cement. This was ordered over six months ago and as yet it has not all come to hand. The work is held up in the meantime. Lysaght Road to Mr. Grant’s property. —Cr. Lysaght and myself inspected this and it was decided not to touch the grade as it would be a very expensive job to put the metal on the road in its present state. Fantham Street. —About thirty chains of this road have been tar-sealed. Nowell Road. —There are about five chains of this road which get bad in the winter time, and if this was metalled it would be passable all the year. It would take about sixty yards of metal to do this work at 13s per yard—say, £5O on the road. The report was received and adopted. GENERAL. A circular letter was.received from the Minister of Public Works regarding the council’s requirements of Mt. Egmont metal.—lt was pointed out by members that the council had already guaranteed to take 10,000 cubic yards the first year and no further action could be' taken at present. Two petitions were received asking the council to open Kepa Street leading to Ohawe beach.—The chairman said it committee had gone into the matter and had reported at the last meeting that they considered the present road when metalled would give good access to Ohawe for several years to come. To open Kepa Street would entail a good deal of expense, and he could see no necessity for acceding to the request, particularly in view of the fact that there was a possibility of the ratepayers going in for a loan for metalling the present road.—lt was decided to reply stating that the council could not accede to the request. Regarding the decision of the Borough Council to remove their present pound, the chairman stated that the committee appointed to go into the question of securing a site for a county pound had not been able to do anything owing to the holidays but would report at the next meeting. ' Mr. G. Hawken, M.P., wrote with reference to the possibility of the Government taking over control of the main roads of the Dominion, and asking that certain information be supplied to him.— It was decided to supply the information and also to sejqtl a copy of it to Mr. W. D 4 Powdrell, M.P.
