TARANAKI DAILY NEWS. STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication should be left at the office of the local representatire, W. J. Wilson, next Union Bank. January 8. While the Hoi\ J- G* Coates, Minister of Public Works was in Stratford last night, he was waited on by Mr. E. Walter (chairman) and Mr. J. W. Spence (engineer), of the Stratford County Council, who placed before him the position regarding the proposal to tunnel the Strathmore Saddle. Mr. Walter explained that the sum of £6OO had already been granted by the Government for metalling the Strathmore Saddle but the residents had held a meeting and decided that the best course would be to make one or two tunnels through the. saddle” and so obviate the present dangerous grade. There were two schemes before them, one of two tunnels of four chains each and one of one tunnel, nine chains in length. The settlers were willing to form themselves into a separate rating area to meet the cost and they wished to know whether they would still be able to rely on the former grant and whether they might be able to get a subsidy on the larger cost. The Minister was sympathetic towards the deputation and promised to get a report on the matter from the Department’s engineers. The deputation Was introduced by Mr. R. Masters, M.P. A special meeting of the Stratford Borough Council will be held on Monday, January 17, for the purpose of deciding the day of the statutory half-holiday in the borough. Sergt. Dale has been appointed to register arms in Stratford under the Registration of Arms Act which came into force on January 1. Persons in possession of firearms should, communicate with the Sergeant at an early date. The Hon. J. G. Coates informed Mr. R. Masters, M.P., yesterday that departmental inquiries would be made into the matter of the institution of parcels delivery service in Stratford.
