THE COLONIAL OFFICE.
RETIREMENT OF LORD MILNER. MR. CHAMBERLAIN MAY SUCCEED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Received Jan. 7, 7.40 p.m. London, Jan. 6. It is understood Lord Milner (Secretary for the Colonies) is resigning. His letter of resignation has been in * Mr. Lloyd George’s hands since Novem- t her, when he asked leave to retire owing to failing health and pressure of private affairs, but Cabinet desired him to remain in office until the future of Egypt was settled, but a settlement is too far off for this hope to be realised. Mr. Austen Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Exchequer) may succeed him at the Colonial Office. Mr Montagu (Secretary for India) becoming Chancellor. It is expected a new department will be created in the Colonial Office, taking over the control of Mesopotamia and Palestine.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
