“MADE IN GERMANY”

GOODS REACHING ENGLAND. MANUFACTURERS ALARMED. The Germans are dumping many articles in Great Britain at prices considerably below those at which British manufacturers can produce them, says an English paper dater November 5. They are able to do this because of the grossly unfair handicap of the difference in the rate of exchange, of which they are taking full advantage. Immediate action is needed to put an end to this menace to British industry. Indignation is rising in commercial circles at the delay of the Government in introducing the long-promised AntiDuraping Bill. Ocular demonstration of the extent to which dumping is in progress is to be provided by the National Union of Manufacturers, who have circularised 2000 of their members, asking them to forward samples of German goods that are being sold more cheaply than they can be made in England, with samples of English goods of the same class with the cost of manufacture. This action should result in an interesting and instructive exhibition. The German is undercutting the British manufacturer in agricultural implements. There is a German threshing machine now on the market in England at £3OO The British manufacturer cannot turn out a machine of similar capacity for less than £4OO. Tanned skins of excellent quality are being offered by German firms at Is 9d per square fopt. British tanners cannot produce them at less than 4s per square foot. The result is that manufacturers of fancy leather goods for the Christmas trade will not buy in the English market. German mist sprays are being offered in England at HAd each. A similar article made in an English midland factory costs 2s 2d. Deerskin gloves are being offered by German firms at 85s per dozen, or 7s Id per pair. This is at least 2s per pair less than the English cost. The German samples provide an example of German, “slininess,” for inside each pair of gloves is a small printed label in perfect French.
