CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
WON BY DUNLOP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The final for the chess championship, between J, B. Dunlop (Oamaru) and A. W. O. Davies (Dunedin) was concluded to-day. The game, which was French defence, was closely contested till the twenty-fourth move, when Dunlop got past a pawn and broke up Davies’ position. Dunlop won a knight at the- thir-ty-fourth move. He continued to attack strongly, and Davies resigned on the 40th move. Dunlop is 34 years of age. He came to New Zealand from Scotland when an infant. He learned chess in London when following his dental studies, and returned to New Zealand in 1906. He won the Otago junior championship in 1909. and the senior in. 1910. He competed for the championship at Timaru in 191O‘-11, obtaining fourth place. He joined the Oamaru Club in 1912. On account of the tournament extending till to-day, the North versus South match was abandoned.
