It has been a strenuous time for punters, horses, and all concerned. The racing boon» continues with unabfted fury. Increased attendances, bigger fields, and record betting figures everywhere. What will be the end of it? In a day or two the papers will be flooded with kill-joys’ condemnations of this betting orgy. The Something-or-other Synod will loudly “deplore,” and Ithe Reverend Thingimy-Bob will wax furious. But the ever growing racing fraternity will move swiftly and ser-
enely on, treading the road that leads to God-knows-where; and the condemnations, the weepings, and the fury of the kill-joys will be drowned in the noisy jangle of the revellers in the maelstrom of riotous pleasure seekers. Who cares if the greedy Tote ate up a cool million and a half quidlets during the holiday racing carnival? There seems to be plenty more where that came from, and next year the Tote won’t be satisfied with less than a paltry two million! It reads like a dream—wonderful, unreal; beyond words! i Apart from the increase of betting—and Taranaki helped in this respect—it is a matter for congratulation that our recent meetings provided first class sport; that fields were larger, “class” more attractive, and racing more interesting than before. The various handicappers did their work well —too well, in fact, for the majority of backers—while the various other details which, en masse, either make or mar success, were all attended to in a manner above reproach. Taranaki horses mopped up the bulk of the stakes offered at New Plymouth and Stratford, though a fair share went to Auckland, Waverley, Wanganui, and Hawke's Bay owners. Taranaki is still strong in hacks, while Volo, Marqueteur, Egmont Park, Simosides, Income and others can still hold their own in open company. Walton, Scrap o’ Paper, Malingerer, Celmisia, Simon, and other “outsiders” also performed with success, and their presence was welcomed by the general racing public—if not by local owners and trainers. Needless to say, horsemanship was not a strong feature of the Taranaki meetings. In the absence of Gray, Deeley, O’Shea and the Reeds, the Wanganui lad, P. Rayner, H. Goldfinch, O. McCarten, and L. Manson showed up best* Some of the “Christmas jockeys” seen on horseback rode no better than could be expected of boys whose opportunities of . gaining experience are reduced to a minimum.
Taranaki horses racing away from home during the holidays were few in number, but they made their presence felt. Silver Link and Paddington Green did big things at Ellerslie (more power to them!), and Tiranga proved quite a champion on the West Coast. At Marton, Rational and Simonides held their end up nobly, while the Haweraowned Man o’ War pulled off the Auckland Trotting Cup.
