In the opinion of New Y'ork sporting writers Carpentier’s stock rose greatly as a result of Dempsey’s relatively . poor showing against Brennan, who really won the first five rounds, and was even to the eighth, when Dempsey landed two crushing blows on the stomach. Jack Kearns, the champion's manager, claims that Dempsey was somewhat overtrained and slow The champion had only bad two fights in 17 months. Dempsey missed frequently, and his timing was slow. The consensus of opinion is that he retained the championship, but lost much color. During the earlier part of the fight, when Brennan was carrying the fight to the champion and leading all the time, the spectators howled wildly, expecting to see the championship change hands.
