SPORTING.

i STRATFORD RACES. CONCLUDING* DAY’S RESULTS. I - A RECORD GATHERING. The Stratford Racing Club’s annual meeting was concluded yesterday in beautiful weather, and there was another very large attendance. In this respect the club ■ has easily established a record, for the gate takings on the first day this year exceeded those of both days last year. Sport again proved very interesting, the finishes being remarkably close, a tribute* to the work of Mr. W Russell, who framed the handicaps for the second day. His work kept investors busy throughout the day sorting out the winners, only one first favorite saluting the judge. As on the first day, Mr, Morse despatched his fields well, whilst Mr. J. R. L. Stanford, in the judge’s box, hoisted the numbers with his usual promptitude. During the running of the first race Lady Pat fell, and her rider (Conway) received a severe shaking. Mr. Gordon, stipendiary steward, was present, and not being satisfied with the riding of Walton during the Lowgarth Welter, had an enquiry, with the result that L. Manson, the rider, was severely censured for keeping the horse so far back. The totalisator handled £40,047 10s during the day, making a total of £81.307 for the two days, as compared with last year, an increase of £lBO6. Details of the racing are:— CARDIFF HACK HANDICAP, of 150 sovs., second horse 30 sovs and third 15 sovs. from the stakes; 7 furlongs. 1 Mr. D. Stockman’s ch g Master Curran, aged, by Master Soult—Biddy Curran, 7.12 (Anderson) 1 5 Thomason and Fantham’s b g Crystal Palace, 6yrs, by Husbandman—Lady West, 7.3 (E. Pine) 2 3 Mr. Jas. Hockley), 4 Lady Pat 7.0 (Conway), 7 Skylight 7.0 carried 7.1% (Cochrane), and 6 Patrogun 7.0 carried 7.4 (Rutherfurd). Winner trained by owner. All carded started. Master Curran was best fancied by the public, with Piro Piro also in demand. The favorite justified public confidence by striking to the front from the rise of the barrier and remaining there to pass the post a length in front of Crystal Palace, who beat Maropa for second place by half a head, this pair being close together all through. Lady Pat fell, and Conway sustained a slight concussion. Time, Imin. 29 4-ssec.

TOKO WELTER HACK HANDICAP, of 175 sovs., second horse 35 sovs., and third K sovs. from stakes; 8% furlongs. 7 Mr. J. The public went solidly for Warrawee, with Trombone, carrying just half as much, next in demand. Country Air caused a little trouble at the barrier, and was left, the balance of the field getting away in line. Trombone was tho first to show out, and led past the stand from Vagrancepieee and Riki, with the favorite well back. At the half mile post Riki took the lead from Mangawai and a bunched field, and this was the order to the straight entrance. Heading for home, Mangawal went to the front, and stalling off a challenge from Warrawee, lasted long enough to by a short neck. Riki was a head further back third, and Trombone close up fourth. Time, Lain. 52 2-ssec. MALONE MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 500 sgvs., second horse 100 sovs. and third 50 aovs. from stakes; 8% furlongs. 6 ’Mr. F. Simon was the only withdrawal, leaving six to face the barrier. A heavy betting race saw Sir Huon a better favorite than Scrap o’ Paper and Crucelle, each carrying over four figures. There was also solid support for the others. From a good start Crucelle, Sir Huon and Scrap o’ Paper were the first to show out, and led the way from Volo, with Dribble last. At the back Scrap o’ Paper ran into second place, and this was the order to the turn for home. Crucelle led Scrap o’ Paper into the straight from Sir Huon, Volo and Marqueteur. At the distance the lastnamed, who had come through on the rails, came with a burst and got on terms with the leader, whom he beat in the last few strides, and gained the verdict by half a neck, with Scrap o’ Paper a. similar distance away. Dribble was dose up fourth, and Sir Huon fifth. Time, Imln. 49sec. MAKURI HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 175 sovs., second horse 35 sovs. and third 17 sovs. from stakes; 1% miles. 4 Mr. D. J. All the acceptors faced the barrier. The public sorted out Nicomar as favorite, with Diamond Nap next Ln demand, though there was also solid support for Ngakanui, Banogue and Te Toa. Te Toa, "Bushman and Nicomar led in the early stages front a strung-out field. Passing the stand Hushman went to the front, Nicomar running into second position, with Banogue fourth, Diamond Nap and Ngakanui also improving their positions. Three furlongs from home Banogue was with the leader, and the pair jumped the last obsta, ’ l e together. Banogue outpaced Nicomar on the run home, and gained the verdict by a length, with Hushman three lengths away third. Ngakanui was fourth. Time, 2min. 52secs. Hepta and Egmont Palk led the way for the first four furlongs, when the hitter went to the front and led into the straight, where Income came with a rattle, and was up with Egmont Park at the distance, and going on won comfortably by a good length, with Vermillion two lengths further back. Hepta was fourth. Time, lunin. 45 2-ssecs.

Tiora was momentarily prominent, but when the field settled down Flying Master took the lead from Jovial, and this pair raced round to the bend together. Turned for home, Jovial went to the front and won by two lengths from Flying Master, Lady Polly being a length away third, and Festive fourth. Time, lunin 3secs.

Two lengths each way. Time, Imin. Isec. NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. The opening event went to the ex-New Plymouth owned Esthonia, who asserted hamself In tte run home, and cut out the mile in the fast time of 1.38, with Early Dawn second and Tinopai close up third. Amberine was a good fourth. The disappointments were Counter Attack and Windorah. The fonmer simply would not answer the demand of his rider, while the latter was only prominent until the pace was clapped on. Counter Attack has always been considered a moody customer, and there is evidently something in that belief. Bute Sound was out in front for the most part, but Iris light boy hardly suited him.

Kick Off. a son of All Black and Fair Rosamond, simply walked away with the Sylvia Handicap in the straight, and Gray’s followers threw in for a good win. as his mount gave a real indication of the success when he ran third to Royal Box earlier at the meeting. Grotesque, who finished second, is a son of Absurd and Bronze, and is not thoroughly readv, while Royal Box did not saddle up too well.

Maloha proved to in great form again by asserting himself at the close of the Grandstand Ha .dicap, and looked to have the stake at his onercy. However, Gray was taking matters rather easy, and before he realised It young Mackie brought Red Ribbon along near the rails at a great pace, and made a dead heat of it, with Gray a very surprised man. Molyneaux was going along well with the leaders to the turn, but then dropped out. The pace was on throughout, which l was evidenced by the time, 2.7 2-5.

As was generally expected, Mermin carried his unbeaten record a further stage by accounting for the, Royal Stakes, being out in front practically throughout, to win from Maunu, Rossini and Humbug in order. The Hawk was missing owing to some unaccountabk internal ailment, which may prevent him from being persevered with for some little time.

Silver Link proved herself a great mare when she won the County Handicap with 9.10 on her back. Queen Abbey came with a great rush over the last bit, and it looked as if she must have won had she been better Dlaced from the. start. She just cut Geoffrey cut of second money, while Miss Gold was fourth. Tinokaka and Golden Bubble were the early leaders. The totalisator . oney waa held up owing to a protest, but the placi.tgs cf the judge were ultimately left alone. Gloaming aliowed Tenterfield and Gasbag to carry on the running in the Auckland Plate for the most part, when he came on and added another 700 sovs. to his record in his usual style, while Gasbag netted 200 and Mr. Greenwood the 100 for third with Vespucci. The running proved that Gasbag was rightly entitled to the Derby honors over Vespucci.

A big field lined up for the Grey Handicap, which proved a good thing for Going Up, another of Absurd’s stock. The winner is another of Arrowsmith’s stabflt) conrpanionsv and after a furlong she assumed command, and was never headed, running the five furlongs in Imin Isec. Royal Mark was second, and Gray’s mount (Miss Ellice) third. Emerald Hill (O'Shea’s mount) was fourth. She got all the worst of the early running, being badly hemmed in. The winner got through a very attractive preliminary.

HAWKE’S BAY MEETING. ‘ CONCLUDING DAY’S RESULTS. Hastings, Last Night. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s summer meeting concluded to-day in perfect weather. The attendance was very large. The amount put through the totalisator was £33,268, compared with £36,780 for the second day last year, a decrease of £3512.
