NORTH v. SOUTH TARANAKI, WIN FOR SOUTH BY 124 RUNS. A trial match between representative teams from North and South Taranaki was played at Hawera yesterday, in splendid weather. Both teams were without the services of several of the players who had been selected, and had to fill their places with emergencies. The match resulted in a win for the southern team by 124 runs on the first innings. South won the toss, and McCarthy, who captained, decided to bat, sending Little and Penny to the wickets. Foreman took the first one. The sixth ball, a full toss, bowled Little, who had scored two boundaries I —9/11/8. Pratt filled the vacancy, and two singles were scored off Jupp's first over. Both batsmen appeared to appreciate Jupp, frequently sending him to the boundary, whilst Pratt lifted him for 6. Fifty was put up after 25 minutes’ play.

Penny’s total was brought up to fifty by a four and a single off Foreman. A couple more singles brought the South’s total up 'to the century. Pratt soon brought his score up to 50. Pratt skied one, which was caught by Jupp, and the second wicket fell for 144/2/60. At the luncheon adjournment 'the score was 252 for four wickets.

Soon after resuming, McCarthy was caught by Foreman in Gibson’s second over—2BB/5/34. H. Hughes came in, and ( after two singles off Gibson’s over he was caught by Osborne—29l/6/2. L. Hughes then came in, and was promptly bowled by Foreman, the score being the same. Harrison filled the vacancy, and was caught by Foreman when he had reached four—299/8/4. In Foreman’s next over Sarten caught A. Hughes—--300/9/69. Worrall and Whalen then took the wickets. Runs were few and far between at this stage, there being four maiden overs in succession. During Foreman’s over Worrall skied a good one, which was easily caught by Gibson. The innings lasted two and a quarter hours, and produced 304 runs. North opened with Sarten and Gibson. Gibson was the first to go, being cleanbowled—23/1/14. Scrimgeour, who followed, was run out—42/2/11. Safiten continued to add to his score with singles. Then Morrison was neatly caught by Pratt, off McCarthy’s ball, and the third wicket fell—s7/3/7.

I. W. Palmer filled the vacancy, and scored a single in the first over. Sarten was the next to fall, being caught by Harrison in the fourth ball of the over—6o/4/25. Macdonald went to the wickets and commenced his score with a single off McCarthy’s ball. Harrison replaced McCarthy at the southern end, and Palmer took a couple off the third and last balls, bringing North’s total to 82. Bain then relieved Hughes at the other end, and the first ball of his first over got Palmer’s wicket —95/5/15. Quickfall filled the vacancy. In Harrison’s next over the score reached 100, the innings having then lasted about an hour. In Bain’s .next over Quickfall was. caught bv Harrison behind the wickets —152/0/17.

Osborne (captain) then took the bat. Presently Macdonald was caught by Pratt—ls7/7/52. Jupp went to the wickets and made a good start by hitting Bain for two, but he did not stay long at the wickets, being caught by Harrison in the same over—l6l/8/6. At the afternoon tea adjournment the score was 165 for eight wickets. Play re-opened with McCarthy bowling, Osborne hitting a single in the over. In McCarthy’s next over Osborne hit a three and the next ball caught Foreman’s wickets—4Bo/9/2. S. Palmer filled the vacancy, but in the first ball of Bain’s next over Osborne was caught by Little, North being all out for 180, leaving South with a lead of 124 on the first innings.
