A MOTORING FATALITY.
PICNICKERS PLUNGED INTO RIVER. SOME BRAVE RESCUES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, Jan. 3. At 10 o’clock this morning, at lona, a motor-bus, running between 'Hastings and Clive Grange, and carrying fourteen women and children who were picnicking, plunged with its living freight into the river below. By a miracle all were saved except Mrs. William Hesketh, who was pinned to the bottom of the river under the bus. The body was recovered two hours later. The bus sank in ten fee>t of water, entirely submerging the occupants. At firs<’t there were pitiable scenes, women looking for children and children for their parents. Some brave rescues were effected. Edna Hart, aged 14 years, brought no less than four little children to shore. The little daughter of Ninian Hyslop, of the Bank of New South Wales, had a narrow escape, but was restored eventually. Apart from cuts, bruises, and shock, none of the others were injured. The cause of the accident is a mystery. The driver, George Tucker, was an expert motorman.
