ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
DROWNED AT A PICNIC. By Telegraph.— Press Association. Hastings. Jan. 3. Florence Smith, aged 21, unmarried, a resident of Havelock North, was drowned on New Year’s Day while bathing in a lake at Tomoana during the progress of a picnic party. An inquest was held and a verdict of accidental drowning returned. The coroner commended the action of the pienicers, especially Mrs. Barley, for their efforts io save the girl. A WIDOWER’S SUICIDE. Taumarunui, Jan- 3. Charles Sachs, a widower, aged 42 years, who was employed as a quarry - map by the Brick and Tile Co., committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. He lost his wife last October and was left with four young children to care for. On Saturday he complained of feeling unwell. His son aged 13 found him in the back-yard early on Sunday with his jugular vein severed. A MINER FOUND DEAD. Westport, Jan. 3. A miner named Dennis M'Leely, of Burnett’s Face, was found dead in bed this morning with his throat cut. He was a single man, aged 35 years. CHILD SHOT BY BROTHER. Dannevirke, Jan. 3 John Baines, aged 4 years, son of Alfred Baines. sheepfarmer, Ormondville, was accidentally shot dead by his elder brother, aged 6, on New Year’s Day. The elder boy, who is a cripple, was playing in an outhouse, when he found a single-barrel gun loaded. He was playing with it when it went off, shooting the younger child. An inquest is being held.
